MEETING PLACE Newcomers plan luncheon Brunswick Newcomers will meet Thursday, June 18, at 11:30 a.m. at Fox Squirrel Country Club in Boiling Spring Lakes. The meeting will feature a luncheon and the installation of 1992-93 of ficers. . For reservations, persons should call 278-4242. The deadline for reserva tions is June 11. Toastmasters officers elected Brunswick Toastmasters has elected officers for the coming year. Glenda Dennis will serve as president, Lori Bates as vice-president of ed ucation, James Wheeler as vice-president of membership, Charlene Del Pezzo as vice-president of public relations, and A1 Hancock as secretary, treasurer and sergeant-at-arms. Officers will be formally installed July 1 by area governor David Dorsett. Brunswick Toastmasters meets every Wednesday at 7 a.m. at the Sea Captain Restaurant. AARP hears ‘Plant Doctor’ Chapter 4180, American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), will hold its regular monthly luncheon meeting at the Sandfiddler Restaurant near Southport at noon Thursday, June 25. The program speaker will be Dr. Bruce Williams of the Brunswick County Cooperative Extension Service, an expert on grasses, lawns and turfs. "Luncheon meetings will be discontinued for the summer months of July and August; however, our breakfast meetings on the last Tuesday of each month will continue through the summer," announced president Jimmy Wolfe, "Please join us for our breakfast meeting June 30 at Edna’s Kitchen in Long Beach." All AARP members are welcome, as are prospective members. Toastmasters meet June 18 Night Owl Toastmasters will meet at the Southport-Oak Island Chamber of Commerce office Thursday, June 18, at 7:30 p.m. Sandra Christenbury will serve as toastmaster for the evening. Scheduled speakers include Pat Pinkerton and Rita Miller. Janice Finchum will host "table topics". Guests are welcome at all meetings. For more information, persons should telephone Lori Bates at 278-6210. Retired Marine Corps general James Mead was guest of honor and speaker at Southport’s Flag Day celebration Sunday. The affair, sponsored by the Southport Bicentennial Committee, was held in the Community Building because of rainy weather. C. Fourth of July Festival. One dollar tickets are available from club members or at the club’s booth, which will be set up in Franklin Square during the festival. The quilt, off white with blue trim and a multi-colored design, was hand-made by Pauline Sellers of Supply. r Library fund-raiser booked for June 27 Oak Island Library Boosters’ fund-raising auction which was rained out in May is scheduled for Saturday, June 27, at 818 Yaupon Drive, Yaupon Beach. The auction will benefit the boosters group, which anticipates entering into a contract on an Oak Island property following the auc tion. Although the Brunswick County Board of Commissioners has allocated money for the con struction of an Oak Island branch to the county library system, the boosters must raise funds for the site location. The boosters said they hope the auction will give them the money they need to acquire a suitable site. The June 27 auction will feature furniture, knick-knacks, books, a swimming pool, tools, gift certifi cates, art work and other items, in cluding baked goods and conces sions by the Southport-Oak Island Jaycees. People who are unable to attend the auction can submit silent bids on art work and big-ticket items such as lawn mowers donated by Stewart Hardware and Lowe’s of Southport, the microwave from Crossroads Ap pliance, and the chainsaw and Skil saw. Anyone wishing to leave a bid can contact Kim Skipper at 278 7687 for more information. Donations are still being accepted and can be taken to the former United Carolina Bank building in Yaupon Beach between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Saturday, June 20, or the morning of the auction.
